How do you define success?

That is a difficult one. It can be defined in so many ways. Lets have a look in the dictionary. I’m always surprised what it really means and how is it is used in real life.

1.  the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.
2.  the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3.  a successful  performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.
Even in the dictionary they are not able to give one definition. To be honest none of the definitions resonate with me. Maybe that is why it is so difficult for me and for a lot of others to give an answer to this question. There are of course people that know exactly how to define success.  They know there goal and are taking no scenic roads a long the way. They go straight for their success and are very happy when they reach there goal. They are at ease when this have become their success. Maybe define another goal/success but most of us the definition changes during the life we live.

For me at the moment success is being healthy, happy and have my loving family and friends in my heart. It means being true to myself, for who I am and what my gifts are in this life. Every day I look around and I see so much to be thankful for, that I know “I am Successful”. It always sounds so easy to say. Almost as a cliché. But trust me that is not so. It takes a lot of effort and care to be in good health, happy, be true to yourself and ready to face the world that we life in.

Although it should be normal that you live in a safe world where you can trust people in your close circle. That you are cared for by others and there is no need for you to watch your back. But sadly that is not always the truth. So it is important to take care of yourself. To make sure that what you send out, is of the same quality as you wish to receive back. That your health is great, that you are ready to bounce back if necessary. That you have some reserve to give to close loved ones. That you are that tree and if necessary you can bend in a storm and that you can transform in all the seasons of your life.

The real definition is different for every one of us, but that definition is always correct.

Yes, I too, find the dictionary definitions for success largely lacking. I looked up the etymology of the word. Sometimes that is helpful in defining a word more accurately. This is from an online etymology dictionary: Success comes from the Latin word “successus” meaning an advance, succession, happy outcome. Also: “succedere” to succeed, come after, meaning the accomplishment of a desired end.
Here is a quote: “the squalid interpretation put on the word succcess… is our national disaster.” (Henry James to HG Wells)
I think about this word often and am always looking to define it for myself. Recently my personal definititon of success is this: Being successful is being a good problem solver.
